Asian Heritage Month 2009:

Come celebrate Asia Canada

As Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said, “Canada is a country where people from every conceivable cultural background have bonded together to create one of the most diverse, harmonious, and successful societies on earth.”

Countless immigrants from the various Asian countries have brought with them a wealth of languages, ethnicities, and religions that are integral to Canada’s vibrant and diverse cultural heritage.

In December 2001, the Senate of Canada designated the month of May as Asian Heritage Month in recognition of the many ways in which Asian cultures and traditions have contributed to the strength of our communities and our shared Canadian identity.

Since then, communities across the country have been organizing annual festivities highlighting Asian arts and culture.

This year’s theme, “Building Canadian Identity,” provides an opportunity to recognize the many achievements made by Canadians of Asian origin towards the building of our country. The history of Asian Canadians is woven through our national history. One such example is the Asahi Baseball team, formed in 1914 in Vancouver, which enjoyed enormous success and became a symbol of Japanese Canadians’ struggle for equality and respect.

“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I express my best wishes to all Asian Canadians. I also encourage Canadians across the country to take part in Asian Heritage Month activities in your community to expand your cultural horizons and get better acquainted with your fellow citizens,” said the Hon. Jason Kenney.
