The 2009 Asian of the Year Award Winners have been announced!

OTTAWA, ONT (May 6th, 2009): The winners have been announced! AsiaNetwork 2009 Asian of the Year Awards is very proud to announce the five outstanding Canadians that have been chosen as winners for 2009.

In the arts/sports category the winner is Ms. Sandra Oh from Ottawa, Ont. Of Korean-Canadian descent, Ms Oh has won numerous awards for acting and is best known for her role as Dr. Cristina Yang in the television series Grey's Anatomy. She is also fluent in Korean, English, French and Spanish.

Also a winner in the arts/sports category is Ms. Carol Huynh from Hazelton, B.C. Of Vietnamese Canadian descent, Ms. Huynh is a Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist specializing in freestyle wrestling. Ms. Huynh is only the second female wrestler from Canada who has won a medal.

In the business/public service category the winner is Dr. David T. Fung from Vancouver, B.C.! Dr. Fung is a Chinese Canadian who is the Chairman & CEO of ACDEG Group and is actively involved on many boards and advisory committees. He also has investment partnerships in North America, Europe and Asia and holds degrees in chemical engineering and business.

In the lifetime category AsiaNetwork is proud to announce Chinese Canadian The Right Hon. Adrienne Clarkson from Toronto, Ont. A former Governor General and a one-time journalist for the CBC, Ms. Clarkson has won numerous ACTRA awards and has represented Canada internationally since the 1980s. Ms. Clarkson also co-founded the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

In Asia-Canada relations AsiaNetwork is also proud to announce from Shawinigan, Quebec The Right Hon. Jean Chretien and former Prime Minister of Canada. Mr. Chretien is the 20th Prime Minister of Canada, has led four "Team Canada" trade missions to China, and increased the amount of trade between Canada and China during his tenure.

AsiaNetwork Asian of the Year Awards is an annual award program created by AsiaNetwork Magazine in 2006, in recognition of many unsung Asian Canadian heroes featured in the magazine. The Asian of the Year Awards have been run and funded by AsiaNetwork Magazine and is currently run by the Asian of the Year Awards Society through fundraising initiatives.
